Cheap Wheelchairs and Starting to Understand A Disability

The first time I encountered a person in a wheelchair and it was a cheap wheelchairs but that is beside the point I was very nervous and it made both me and the person in the wheelchair very uncomfortable. It was a matter of time and exposure and acceptance that brought me to the point where I could interact with a disabled person and not worry that I was doing something wrong and I would not say something wrong. After this education in the school of hard knocks I felt it was the right thing to do to try to help people that felt the same uncomfortable way that I did as it was not something that I wanted anyone else to have to experience again unarmed. The list you see below is a very cursory example of what may be used to assuage the fears of your interaction and make your disabled friend or acquaintance feel more comfortable.. First, just like you this person that is in the wheelchair is just like you other than their ability to be mobile is challenged at times. Second, offer your help but don’t just assume they want your help. Sometimes they would rather do it alone. Third, it is not unusual for a person in a wheelchair to start to consider the wheelchair a part of their personal. You need to address them in that fashion. Forth, when speaking to a person in the wheelchair always try to as much as possible stay on eye level. Fifth, don’t be disrespectful in any way towards the disabled person by talking about them as if they were not there or patting them. This can seem very condescending. Sixth, it may be important to understand that a person in the wheelchair may not have any desire for you to arrange their expensive wheelchair or even their cheap. Offer but don’t assume anything. Seventh, always inquire what help they may need but only assist after given permission. These tips are just the very beginning learning process whereby you can acquaint yourself with people with disabilities and start to understand they are really the same except they have disabilities and special needs that we can help with. Be respectful when dealing with a person in expensive wheelchairs or cheap wheelchairs as they are the all the same and you and I and you will go far in helping these that have been dealt a hand from God to handle a unique situation.
